ArmInfo. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of long delays of Georgian freight forwarders' railcars on Azerbaijani rail ferries at the port of Aliati on the Caspian Sea. This was reported to BMG by Paata Tsagareishvili, Director of the Center for Transport Research.
According to him, the main reason for the delays are administrative barriers artificially created by Azerbaijani port services.
Tsagareishvili argues that the Georgian government needs to intervene to resolve the problem, as such bureaucratic complications reduce the attractiveness of the Middle Corridor. "Currently, approximately 700-900 railcars carrying cargo from Georgia are waiting in line on the Azerbaijani side. Forwarders cite the fact that the Azerbaijani side is prioritizing Azerbaijani railcars as one of the main reasons for the delay. In other words, there are some discriminatory practices regarding ferry use," he noted.
He noted that this problem is already becoming more complex, noting that it has become somewhat more evident over the past two months.
