ArmInfo. The number one candidate on the Strong Armenia Party's electoral list, if the political party wins the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, 2026, will become the interim leader, ensuring party chairman Samvel Karapetyan's rise to power. Narek Karapetyan, a member of the Strong Armenia Party Council, stated this in an interview with the Armenian television channel Kentron, when asked why he is first on the party's electoral list if Samvel Karapetyan is the party's candidate for prime minister.
"The number one candidate on our party's electoral list will play an interim role. He will be responsible for initiating amendments to the Constitution of Armenia, specifically Article 148, which concerns the requirements for government representatives and determines who can serve as prime minister.
This, in turn, will ensure the appointment of Samvel Karapetyan as prime minister of Armenia," explained a member of the party council.
Recall that on February 13, 2026, lawyer and party member Aram Vardevanyan, responding to statements by representatives of the ruling Civil Contract party that, according to the Constitution of Armenia, Karapetyan cannot serve as prime minister because he holds both Armenian and Russian citizenship, noted that the path to his candidacy for the post lies through constitutional amendments. Specifically, Vardevanyan explained, through amendments to Article 148, which concerns the requirements for government representatives and determines who can serve as prime minister.
On April 15, during a court hearing at the Armenian Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan, Samvel Karapetyan announced that he had begun the process of renouncing his Russian and Cypriot citizenship.
