ArmInfo. This time, healthy trees, in front of the Sos Sargsyan Theater, were cut down on Henri Verneuil Street, as reported by Samvel Farmanyan, a former MP from the third President Serzh Sargsyan's Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), who shared a related footage on his Facebook page.
Farmanyan drew attention to the fact that it has become nearly impossible to breathe in Yerevan, especially in the city center. "There is nothing but unbearable dust and highly polluted air. The remaining green spaces and trees are simply being chopped down. And all this for the sake of 'pennies for a couple of people.' This is what the sovereignty of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan looks like. Otherwise, 'the Soviet regime forced Yerevan residents to breathe clean air for decades. We, our city if we want to, we breathe dust. And if we don't want to, we won't breathe at all, because now we are "sovereign,"'" Farmanyan concluded.
It's worth noting that, starting in 2023, Yerevan City Hall has been implementing a so-called tree replacement program, especially in the city center. Authorities explain this initiative by "the need to renew trees that are losing their viability with more valuable species." However, experts believe that the city hall is actually committing ecocide. Despite persistent warnings from environmentalists about the illegality of such actions, authorities continue to cut down healthy trees, replacing them with cherry trees and other species that are not well suited to the country's climatic conditions.
