ArmInfo.Wiretaps of telephone conversations in Armenia are legal. Artur Nahapetyan, Chairman of the RA Anti-Corruption Committee, told journalists on June 10.
According to him, a specific procedure has been established for wiretaps: first, the rapid response agency identifies a citizen suspected of committing a crime, conducts investigative actions, and, if necessary, applies to the court for wiretapping. Only after receiving a court decision do law enforcement agencies take the necessary steps.
Nahapetyan assured that all circumstances are examined during the investigative process, and if it is discovered that leaders of political parties are involved in a crime, criminal proceedings are initiated against them. The committee head declined to provide any data on this matter, citing preliminary consideration of criminal cases and investigative secrecy. He added that, until today, the Anti-Corruption Committee had operated transparently, periodically issuing reports and press releases.
Nahapetyan disagreed with the prevailing belief that all citizens are being wiretapped. He said this was simply physically impossible.
