RA Deputy FM delivers remarks at high-level round table discussion  entitled "Crimes That Affect the Environment: Threats to a  Sustainable Future" 

ArmInfo.On June 29, within the framework of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan participated and delivered remarks at the high-level round table discussion entitled "Crimes That Affect the Environment: Threats to a Sustainable Future".

In his remarks, Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan touched  upon the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the  Convention on Biological Diversity, to be held in Armenia later this  year, emphasizing its pivotal role in the implementation of the  Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the first  Global Review, as well as in strengthening the nexus between  biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and the rule of  law.

The Deputy Foreign Minister underscored countering environmental  crimes as a pivotal component in achieving global biodiversity  targets. Robert Abisoghomonyan reaffirmed the commitment of Armenia  to fostering inclusive and results-oriented discussions aimed at  enhancing international cooperation and reinforcing the role of  criminal justice institutions in safeguarding biodiversity.

The Deputy Foreign Minister also outlined the initiatives envisioned  under the auspices of and in the lead-up to COP17, initiated by the  Presidency of Armenia alongside international partners and aimed at  advancing closer synergy between the environmental and criminal  justice communities.

In conclusion, Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan  highlighted that the theme chosen by Armenia "Taking Action for  Nature" is not merely a slogan, but a call to action that demands  political will, effective implementation and collective  responsibility to translate our shared commitments into tangible  steps.

As a reminder, on October 31, 2024, during the 16th Conference of the  Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in  Cali, Armenia was selected to host the 17th Conference of the  Parties. This selection confirms the growing trust of the  international community in Armenia as an important actor in global  environmental processes. Armenia is now responsible for coordinating  and advancing international efforts within the framework of the  Convention on Biological Diversity, helping to overcome the  contemporary environmental challenges facing humanity.

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity is one of three key  international environmental conventions aimed at guiding the  international community's efforts to ensure environmental  sustainability, protect biological diversity, restore ecosystems, and  sustainably use natural resources. The Conference of the Parties to  the Convention is one of the largest global environmental events,  held every two years, during which member states develop mechanisms  to implement the provisions of the Convention and adopt new  commitments to strengthen the protection of natural resources.  Representatives of civil society, including representatives of  non-governmental organizations, indigenous peoples, the scientific  community, women's and youth organizations, and the private sector,  actively participate in the work of the Conferences.
