Armenia`s Prosecutor General`s Office  submits March 1 criminal case  materials against late Police chief Hayk Harutyunyan to court

ArmInfo.The Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia has forwarded the case materials and the approved indictment to the Yerevan Criminal Court of General Jurisdiction against the late Hayk Harutyunyan, former Chief of the Police of the Republic of Armenia, who held the position from 2003 to May 2008.

Recall, as part of the criminal proceedings initiated in connection  with the events  in Yerevan on March 1- 2, 2008 (major public unrest  during the post-election period, resulting in deaths - ed.), the  prosecutor, on his own initiative, on April 18, 2026, initiated a  public prosecution against Hayk Harutyunyan for "complicity in abuse  of office by an official, involving the use of violence, weapons, or  special means" and "official negligence that resulted in the death of  a person or other grave consequences through negligence."

The official statement from the Prosecutor's Office noted that, in  complicity with other high-ranking officials of the RA police, Hayk  Harutyunyan organized the dispersal of a peaceful sit-in  demonstration in Freedom Square in Yerevan by various police units  using violence and special means. According to the Prosecutor's  Office, these actions caused significant harm to the rights and  legitimate interests of citizens, as well as the legitimate interests  of society and the state. It is noted that, given the death of Hayk  Harutyunyan in 2019, the decision to initiate public criminal  prosecution against him was handed over to his legal representative,  his wife, who objected to the termination of the public criminal  prosecution based on the death of the accused.
