ArmInfo. Diplomats from the Russian Consulate General in Gyumri have laid flowers at the base of the "Hill of Honor" memorial to mark the 170th anniversary of its establishment. The historic site serves as the final resting place for Russian soldiers and officers who died heroically during Russia's 19th-century military campaigns in the South Caucasus.
According to the press service of the Russian Consulate General, the commemorative event was organized in cooperation with the command of the 102nd Russian military base, the 39th border detachment, the Russian House, municipal authorities, and local compatriots. Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General Igor Titov emphasized that the memorial stands as a vital link symbolically uniting the two nations.
"This is a tribute to those who fought for Russia's interests and who united the efforts of Russians and Armenians. Russia's significant role in preserving Armenian identity over the centuries forms a solid foundation for the special relations between our peoples. In this regard, the city of Gyumri holds particular significance, having developed as an outpost of Russian influence in the South Caucasus," Titov noted.
Restored in 2010, the "Hill of Honor" commemorates the heroic chapters of shared history and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving historical truth. The Consul General expressed deep gratitude to the municipal authorities for recently renovating the memorial, as well as to all the organizations that contributed to its reconstruction 16 years ago.
