ArmInfo. In Armenia, instead of strengthening the independence of the judiciary, they are proposing a complete politicization of its governance. Lawyer Arsen Babayan wrote this on his Facebook page, citing an interview with RA Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan.
"The interview with the Minister of Justice clarified what the government plans to do with the new Constitution. The powers of all judges will be abolished, after which a new formation of the judicial system will begin, this time with the reappointment of the 'favorites.' The goal, I think, is obvious: to get rid of those judges who are still capable of making objective and independent decisions as quickly as possible," the lawyer noted.
He noted that the entire Supreme Judicial Council will be elected by the political authorities. According to the current Constitution, political authorities constitute only half of the Supreme Judicial Council, with the other half elected by judges. The new approach also envisages the elimination of this final counterbalance. In other words, instead of strengthening the independence of the judiciary, they are proposing the complete politicization of its governance.
"A constitutional referendum will be convened at any cost. They will do it, no matter what. They already have experience in this matter: they already introduced unconstitutional amendments to the Constitution once. Will the government be able to accomplish all this? Unfortunately, the answer is clear: yes, it will be possible. And why will it be possible? Because our parliamentary opposition, which has received mandates, is extremely wealthy," Arsen Babayan emphasized.
