ArmInfo. The house arrest of Armen Ashotyan, Vice Chairman of the Republican Party and former Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, has been extended for another three months. The corresponding decision was made on August 31 by Anti- Corruption Committee Judge Sarkis Dadoyan.
The judge made the decision despite the objections of Ashotyan's lawyers, Tigran Atanesyan and Ruben Melikyan, who insisted on excluding all preventive measures. Prosecutor Mane Safaryan argued that changing the politician's pretrial detention could lead to evidentiary problems related to Ashotyan's possible influence on witnesses.
Meanwhile, the politician himself pointed out the restrictions that hinder his political and expert activities. He also noted that he must collect documents for the criminal case against him regarding illegally acquired property, which is impossible under house arrest.
The judge allowed the RPA deputy chairman to speak to the media and make political statements.
As a reminder, on August 20, the Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia granted the Prosecutor General's Office's petition to confiscate three properties and approximately 385 million drams from Armen Ashotyan, former Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia and Deputy Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia, and individuals associated with him, in favor of the state. According to the Investigative Committee of Armenia, "the former minister, in collusion with six individuals, abused his official position and assisted former Finance Minister Gagik Khachatryan and his son, Artyom Khachatryan, in acquiring property not subject to alienation."
