ArmInfo. In the first half of 2026, 117 convicts were released on parole, compared to 75 in the same period last year. This was announced by Armenian Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan in a video posted on her Facebook page, presenting reforms implemented in the criminal system.
According to the minister, after summarizing the results of the first half of 2026, they recorded positive results. "117 convicts were released on parole, compared to 75 during the same period last year. The number of decisions to ease conditions of detention in security facilities was 47, compared to 39 during the same period last year. Thirty-three decisions were made to ease conditions of detention in Security Zone facilities, compared to 18 during the same period," Galyan reported.
According to her, these figures demonstrate the efforts made toward the resocialization of convicts. The Armenian Minister of Justice also reported that conditions of detention have improved. According to her, 101 facilities have been renovated, compared to 83 during the same period last year. "These works were carried out in almost all penal institutions, resulting in the renovation of cells, restrooms, showers, and rooms for short- and long-term visits. Videoconferencing rooms, investigators' reception rooms, operational management offices, libraries, and gyms, which were equipped with new sports equipment, were also improved," the minister concluded.
It is worth noting that human rights activists and various activists have recently frequently raised concerns about the problem of suicides and deaths in Armenia's penal institutions. It is noteworthy that the rising mortality rate among prisoners is also due, among other factors, to deplorable prison conditions, particularly the lack of basic living conditions, sanitary and hygienic conditions, and poor water and food quality.
