ArmInfo. Discussions on the candidacy of a member of the Commission for the Protection of Competition and Consumer Interests began at the plenary session of the National Assembly of Armenia on October 30.
The country's ruling Civil Contract faction nominated Shushan Sargsyan for the position. Her biography was presented by Babken Tunyan, Chair of the NA Committee on Economic Affairs.
Speaking in parliament, the candidate emphasized the need to consistently ensure equal competitive conditions in the market, including through conducting industry research and identifying violations of competition law, including in new areas, particularly by identifying market abuses. This work, Sargsyan noted, requires teamwork. She emphasized the need for transparent research and easing the administrative burden, which are enshrined in both legislation and institutional frameworks. In particular, the transaction declaration threshold was raised, making it uniform for all market participants. However, for some transactions, the declaration requirement was waived. These are transactions that do not have a significant impact on the competitive environment.
It should be noted that Shushan Sargsyan was nominated as a candidate and successfully elected as a member of the Commission for the Protection of Competition (then the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition, SCPEC) on May 26, 2021. Prior to her appointment as a Commission member, she had worked at the same agency since July 2018 as the chief specialist in the legal department. She holds a law degree (graduated from the Russian-Armenian University). As of 2026, Shushan Sargsyan continues to exercise her powers as an active member of the Commission for the Protection of Competition and Consumer Interests of the Republic of Armenia. .
As a reminder, the Commission monitors compliance with legislation on the protection of economic competition, evaluates and monitors mergers and concentrations of companies, protects consumer rights, and develops cooperation with international organizations (including membership in ICPEN). It also works to prevent monopolistic activities, unfair competition, and anticompetitive agreements. The Commission consists of seven members – a chairperson and six commissioners.
