Greta Thunberg arrives in Armenia 

ArmInfo. One of the world's leading environmental activists, Swedish Greta Thunberg, is already in Armenia. This was reported by the "Armenian Climate Justice"  initiative on its Facebook page.

It is noted that Greta Thunberg was met at the border between Armenia  and Georgia by the chairman of the public organization "Community  Cohesion and Support Center" Oleg Dulgaryan and his colleagues.

As reported by members of the Armenian initiative, the Swedish  environmental activist is boycotting the UN Climate Change Conference  (COP29) due to its holding in Azerbaijan. "Instead, she decided to  express solidarity with Armenia. This decision underscores her  continued commitment to the protection of human rights, as she  previously spoke out against human rights violations in Azerbaijan  and the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Artsakh," the statement  said.

In this regard, the Armenian Climate Justice Initiative plans to hold  side events during COP29, including the conference on November 14,  2024 and a strike in front of the UN office in Yerevan on November  15, 2024.

Earlier in Tbilisi, Greta Thunberg united with activists from  Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia to draw attention to the problem of  holding COP29 in Azerbaijan.

According to media reports, the environmental activist condemned the  decision to choose the capital of Azerbaijan to host the UN Framework  Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), calling it hypocritical.  In  this context, she recalled that Azerbaijan, which hosted COP29,  carried out ethnic cleansing in Artsakh just a year ago. While the  Swedish activist is boycotting COP29, the ruling party in Armenia  refused to accept a statement demanding that Azerbaijan immediately  release the Armenian hostages and ensure the safe return of 120,000  Armenian refugees from Artsakh. The statement also called for the  implementation of the International Court of Justice ruling and  respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia.

It is curious that while protests demanding the immediate release of  Armenian prisoners of war and hostages illegally held in Azerbaijan  began in various countries around the world on the eve of COP29 in  Baku, the ruling Civil Contract faction in Armenia yesterday failed  to adopt a statement initiated by the opposition in parliament on the  imperative of releasing Armenian prisoners of war and hostages from  Baku prisons. The draft statement of the National Assembly, which  emphasized the need to put pressure on Azerbaijan on this issue, was  supported by only 30 opposition MPs. The ruling party stated as an  excuse that this issue is in the center of their attention on a daily  basis and they do not see the need for additional action on this  issue.
