


ArmInfo. The first case of HIV infection in Armenia was reported in 1988. By the end of October this year, there were already 6,076 Armenian citizens and 438 foreign citizens living with HIV in the country. This information was disclosed by Anna Margaryan, the head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, during a press conference on November 25th.
On average she stated that the number of infections increases by 500-530 cases. As of the reporting date, 462 new cases have already been registered in Armenia. The overwhelming majority (70%) are male, with almost half (48%) being people of active reproductive age - from 25 to 39 years old. Infection mainly occurs through heterosexual relations (76%), followed by 14% due to intravenous drug use, 7% from homosexuality, and a very small percentage from infection from mother to child, etc. Citing statistics for the current year, she noted that over the 10 months of 2024, 81% of infections are the result of heterosexual relations, 12% are homosexual, 6% are due to intravenous drug use, and 0.5% are from mother to child. At the same time, the largest number of infections in Armenia is concentrated in the Shirak region.
