As part of their ongoing cooperation with the Golden Apricot International Film Festival, which has spanned over 20 years, the Goethe Institute is working to bring the most captivating international films and experts from Germany to Armenia, as stated by Mariam Gurzadyan, coordinator of cultural programs at the Goethe Institute in Armenia, during a press conference.
She said that four films with German participation will be shown as part of the Made in Germany program, which has become a tradition at the film festival. Gurzadyan specifically stared that she would open this program on July 15 at the Cinema House with a new film by Christian Petzold, a member in the Berlin School film movement, "Mirrors No. 3", which premiered at Cannes. The film is, an attempt to explore the same events through different lenses. In this work, Petzold delves into an important theme for himself - the topic of death. The coordinator noted that all of Petzold's important works over the years have been features as part of the Golden Apricot.
As part of the Yerevan Premieres program, they will show the documentary film "Two Prosecutors" by Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa, which tells about the period of Stalin's repressions and is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the Kharkov physicist and GULAG prisoner Georgy Demidov. This work was co-produced by Germany and France, with its world premiere taking place in Cannes. Viewers in Yerevan will have the opportunity to see the film "Abu Zaabal 89" directed by Bassam Mortada as part of the regional competition program. This film, a co-production between Germany and Egypt, explores the rethinking of a forgotten chapter of political violence - the events that took place in the Abu Zaabal prison in 1989. The premiere of this film took place at the Cairo International Film Festival.
In the short film program, they will be showing the documentary film by Katya Fedulova, which was filmed in Germany. The film tells the story of a 13-year-old boy from Nagorno-Karabakh who drove for 48 hours to bring his family to safety in Armenia from Artsakh, where ethnic cleansing was carried out by the Azerbaijani regime. "We are also glad that last year we had the privilege of hosting the outstanding German cameraman, director and film teacher Fred Kelemen in Armenia, who will lead the jury for the short film competition Koriz program at the 22nd International Film Festival. He will also conduct a 3-day workshop for Armenian filmmakers and cameramen in Yerevan," Gurzadyan said.
Note that this year the Golden Apricot Film Festival will be held from July 13 to 20.
