ArmInfo. The trilateral meeting in Washington aims to weaken Russia and Iran in the region. Political scientist Suren Surenyants expressed this viewpoint at a press conference in Yerevan on August 11.
The political scientist noted that the negative reaction from Moscow and Tehran was quite expected. He also assured that this meeting had caused discontent in China and India. "The reaction from Moscow has already shown that they do not recognize the agreements reached by the parties in Washington. And the reaction from Iran on this matter is even sharper, as they have their own obvious concerns," Surenyants believes.
However, he noted that despite this, both countries are not yet able to take concrete steps and are limited to statements. He explained that in the case of Russia, all resources are currently being taken up by the war in Ukraine, expressing the conviction that if it were not for it, the events that took place in Georgia (the victory of the pro-Russian party in Georgia - ed.) would have been repeated in Armenia long ago. "Therefore, at the moment, it is still unclear what can be expected from Russia. As for Iran, it must be understood that in this matter Iran is an ally not of the Armenian authorities, but of Armenian interests. However, Iran has also weakened against the backdrop of the war (with Israel - ed.) and will not be able to prevent the "red lines" from being crossed without Russia's support," the expert noted.
According to Surenyants, it will take time to understand the real consequences that await the country after the meeting in Washington, and what reactions can be expected from the interested parties. In this vein, the political scientist pointed out the significance of the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska. "This holds significance not only in the context of the war in Ukraine, but also in terms of global politics. Russia's reaction to situation in Armenia also depends on this meeting, which will be much more important than the current statements. It is important to recognize that Nikol Pashinyan has brought the country to such a state that even the reaction of Russia and Iran can have negative consequences for us. However, their absence can be even more dangerous," Surenyants concluded.
