ArmInfo."We must simply expel from the political and public arena those who make statements against Armenia's sovereignty. How? By political means, by all means applicable in a democratic country.
And I am convinced that this is how it will be," Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated 1 during a government hour in parliament on October, in response to a question from ruling Civil Contract faction MP Karen Sarukhanyan regarding statements made by Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, "calling into question the sovereignty of the Republic of Armenia." Sarukhanyan referred to the mayor as "Vardanik."
Let us recall that on April 16, 2025, during a briefing at the mayor's office following his election, the newly elected opposition mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan, stated that he is in favor of a Union State of Armenia with Russia, following the example of Belarus. He has voiced this viewpoint repeatedly.
According to Pashinyan, he had instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to continue all previously launched programs in Gyumri. Regarding the Gyumri mayor's statements, he said, the Gyumri residents themselves must respond to them.
"I think we have a problem with the election results. We know that electoral bribes were distributed. We must have mechanisms to prevent similar cases in the future, where people who distribute electoral bribes ultimately become, or achieve, this status through a misunderstanding. This misunderstanding will be resolved over time: the phenomenon itself, the statement itself, and the author," the Armenian Prime Minister concluded.
