ArmInfo. It has just been reported that Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan has been arrested. He is accused of accepting a bribe on a particularly large scale.
Lawyer Aram Vardevanyan has commented on the situation. According to him, a crisis of democracy is clearly underway in Armenia. To support his argument, the lawyer cited a statement by RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the National Assembly, where he vowed to initiate criminal prosecution against opposition Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan. Vardevanyan considers this threat and the subsequent searches as an example of the blatant politicization of the criminal case.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Committee had reported that eight people have been arrested on corruption related charges.
