ArmInfo. Armenia cannot remain in strategic limbo forever. Political scientist Suren Surenyants writes about this on his Facebook page.
The political scientist recalled yesterday's statement by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk that Armenia cannot remain indefinitely in both the EU and the EAEU. "However, this time the statement is accompanied by a very specific economic signal: a sharp drop in Armenian-Russian trade turnover and growing caution among Russian businesses towards Armenia. From $12.4 billion to approximately $6 billion: this is not just a decline in statistics. This is a political message indicating that Moscow views Armenia's foreign policy maneuvers not in a theoretical, but in a practical sense. Nikol Pashinyan notes that "the time for a choice has not yet come." However, the reality is that the government's foreign policy steps already imply a choice, without publicly accepting political responsibility for it. European integration is talked about as a way out, but there is no clear strategy, no roadmap, and no public consensus. Moreover, all this is happening in a context where even the US National Security Strategy contains harsh assessments of the current state of the EU and its prospects. In other words, Armenia is trying to navigate a system whose future is not entirely clear in itself. And here the main question arises: is the so-called "European agenda" of the authorities a long-term state "A strategy or a domestic political technique to secure domestic political dividends based on anti-Russian sentiment?" Sureniants noted, adding that Armenia cannot remain in strategic limbo forever.
According to the political scientist, the moment of dilemma is approaching, and the price of an incorrect, ill-considered choice may be paid not by the authorities, but by the state.
