ArmInfo. The experience of Sweden and Scandinavian countries in waste management can be useful for Armenia in developing sustainable and effective systems. Deputy Minister of the Environment Ara Mkrtchyan stated this at a meeting with a delegation from Sweden.
According to the press service of the Armenian Ministry of the Environment, during the meeting, which was held as part of an exchange of experience, the parties emphasized the importance of developing and implementing rules of conduct and incentive mechanisms aimed at fostering a culture of waste sorting among citizens. In this context, they discussed a legislative initiative regarding the regulation of plastic bag circulation, which received a positive assessment in the Armenian parliament. Other measures aimed at reducing plastic use were also discussed during the meeting.
The minister also presented to the delegation the work being carried out in preparation for the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which will be held in Armenia in 2026. According to the source, the meeting was an important step toward studying international experience and deepening cooperation between countries in the field of waste management.
As a reminder, on September 24, 2025, the National Assembly of Armenia's Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture, and Environmental Protection issued a positive opinion on amendments to the Law "On Waste" and a package of related laws submitted by the RA government. According to the amendments, a license will be required for handling hazardous waste in Armenia. Adoption of the bills will also prevent the use of unauthorized landfills, and landfill managers will be more consistent in their proper management.
