ArmInfo. The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Armenia, Khalil Shirgolami, announced a visit by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to Iran this year.
"Nikol Pashinyan's visit is included in our 2026 agenda and should be planned within a year. Last year, the Iranian President visited Armenia, and we are also planning a visit by the Armenian Prime Minister this year. We hope that a comprehensive strategic document between the two countries will be signed during this visit," he said in a conversation with reporters on the sidelines of the celebrations for the Iranian Armed Forces.
Regarding US Vice President J.D. Vance's visit to Armenia, the Iranian diplomat recalled that it took place when Tehran and Washington began negotiations in Oman. In this vein, he stated that Iran had entered into negotiations with the United States with complete sincerity and seriousness. "Despite the fact that we have every capability for defense, we prefer diplomacy. We believe that common sense can prevail. I believe Mr. Vance said the following in an interview during his visit to Yerevan: 'Diplomacy can be effective.' Senior representatives of the Republic of Armenia have always assured us of Armenia's good intentions. They hope that a situation that could threaten security will not arise in the region. This is also our desire-for peace to reign and be established in the South Caucasus," he noted.
Responding to a question about Iran's view on the expanded American presence in the region through the TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) mechanism, Shirgolami noted that Iran has always advocated for Armenia to play its role as a transit transport hub and for all communications from north to south and west to east to be unblocked. "We are hopeful about these opportunities, which Armenia is pursuing positively. Today, I met with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan. In a very warm and friendly atmosphere, we discussed the need to make efforts to unblock north-south and east-west communication routes. We also noted the need to work on launching the Julfa-Nakhichevan-Yeraskh railway to establish a link between the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea. This will create tremendous opportunities for all of us," the diplomat added.
Regarding TRIPP, the ambassador noted that Armenian partners have assured them that they will not allow any steps against Iran. "We can form a partnership on this issue. Perhaps it's too early to talk about it now, but in the future, we can seriously consider this," he added.
