Armenian government moves embassy to Bern

ArmInfo.  The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposed relocating the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to the Swiss Confederation, currently operating in Geneva, to Bern, while maintaining the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva. The initiative was approved by the government at a meeting on  February 12.

As stated in the explanatory note to the document, since the  establishment of diplomatic relations (April 30, 1992), relations  between the Republic of Armenia and the Swiss Confederation have  developed in a spirit of friendship, constructive cooperation, and  mutual understanding. Armenia attaches great importance to the  consistent development and deepening of relations with Switzerland in  all areas of mutual interest.

Since 2002, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia and the Permanent  Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the UN and other international  organizations have been located in Geneva. The Permanent  Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the UN in Geneva and  other international organizations is also accredited as the  Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Switzerland.

However, given the distance between the capital Bern and Geneva, and  the specific nature of the multilateral and bilateral agenda, it  became necessary to relocate the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia  in Geneva to Bern.

The RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Bern is home to  approximately 100 embassies accredited to Switzerland, including the  embassies of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, and Georgia.

"The relocation of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to Bern  will further facilitate regular contacts with representatives of the  diplomatic corps, provide an opportunity to more effectively maintain  contacts with them, and will contribute to the development of  bilateral cooperation and the intensification of political dialogue,"  the draft decision states.

After the adoption of the draft, state budget expenditures of the  Republic of Armenia will increase by 407,500 Swiss francs in 2026 and  by 304,800 Swiss francs in subsequent years.
