ArmInfo. Samvel Karapetyan cannot be a candidate for Prime Minister of Armenia, as stated by Ruben Rubinyan, Vice Speaker of the RA National Assembly, at a press conference on February 13.
According to him, Samvel Karapetyan holds dual citizenship - Armenian, Russian, and Cypriot. However, the Constitution prohibits such a combination of citizenships. A candidate for Prime Minister and the Prime Minister themselves must be a citizen of Armenia only. When asked about how Armen Sargsyan became the president of the Republic of Armenia, Rubinyan noted that he wasn't a dual citizen when he was nominated, as no one knew whether he had a second citizenship. "However, why did he resign? Because it was revealed that he held dual citizenship. If this had been known from the start, he wouldn't have been eligible to run for president," Rubinyan emphasized.
Recall, that the day before, it was announced that the "Strong Armenia" party, led by Samvel Karapetyan, philanthropist and president of the Tashir Group of Companies, would be running for Prime Minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
