ArmInfo. If Armenian prisoners are deemed worse than "Nazis," as Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated, and the Azerbaijani judicial system is likened to the Nuremberg Trials, then Armenia can be viewed as a capitulated Germany.
Suren Surenyants, leader of the Democratic Alternative party, made this statement at a press conference in Yerevan on February 17, in response to Aliyev's remarks in an interview with France 24 the previous week.
The politician pointed out that the Azerbaijani president's statements are don't solely focus on Armenian prisoners. According to him, they describe the logic behind resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. The politician thinks that Aliyev's statements were primarily addressed to the international community, rather than a domestic audience. He noted that they were made in an interview with France 24, a reputable international platform.
"That is, Aliyev essentially stated that he sees the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations not based of mutual agreements or a balance of power, but on the logic of Armenia's final capitulation. And he expressed this very clearly," Surenyants believes.
The politician noted that, unlike Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Aliyev demonstrates consistency in both his statements and actions. "Even in the post-war period around Artsakh, we have seen how the statements of the President of Azerbaijan translate into real policy, resulting in a high cost for the Armenian people," the leader of the political force noted. Surenyants expressed his conviction that Armenian prisoners of war will not be returned as part of the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This process has established a pattern where Armenia consistently make more concessions than Azerbaijan, while Baku's concessions are symbolic.
Recall, in an interview with France 24, Aliyev called Armenian prisoners more dangerous than "Nazis" and drew parallels between the trial of the military-political leadership of Artsakh and the Nuremberg Trials.
