ArmInfo. Discussions within the European Union regarding the European Commission's proposal for a 20th sanctions package continue, with no agreement yet, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho stated at a briefing.
"Regarding the sanctions, there is no agreement yet, they are being discussed. Everything that was initially included in our proposal, the European Commission's, is included in the package. But all of this, of course, remains subject to discussion in the EU Council," she said.
She was asked whether the anticipated 20th package would retain measures against the Georgian port of Kulevi, which Georgia allegedly uses to help Russia circumvent EU sanctions, despite Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze maintaining that the terminal does not violate EU sanctions and that the European Commission has been informed of the matter.
According to Pinho, it is currently impossible to say whether this provision will remain in the next sanctions package. "We need to wait for the final approval to see what elements remain in the 20th sanctions package," explained an EC spokesperson.
Western media reported, citing sources, that Italy and Hungary, during the discussions on new sanctions, expressed particular concern about the Kulevi port in Georgia. Italy does not want to impose sanctions on the Kulevi port because it supplies gas from Azerbaijan.
As European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas stated on February 23, EU foreign ministers failed to agree on the 20th sanctions package against Russia on February 23, and work on restrictive measures will continue.
