The National Body for Standardization and Metrology has been granted associate and correspondent membership in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), as noted in a statement issued by the RA Ministry of Economy. RA Minister of Economy Narek Hovakimyan met with UNIDO Deputy Director-General Fatou Haidara at the headquarters of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna.
The meeting was held as part of the "Support to Quality Infrastructure in Armenia" program, funded by the European Union. Under the program, four new modern calibration laboratories in seven professional areas have been established in Armenia. This allows for the testing and adjustment of measuring equipment on- site in accordance with international standards, eliminating the need to send it abroad, and significantly saving time and resources.
New government decisions based on legislation are also planned to align with four key EU directives: the Measuring Equipment Directive (MID), the Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments Directive (NAWI), the Pre-Packaged Products Directive (PPP), and the Bottles as Containers Directive (MBC).
It should be noted that the primary document in this area is the 2012 Law of the Republic of Armenia "On Ensuring the Uniformity of Measurements," which outlines the regulations for verification, calibration, and state metrological supervision.
