ArmInfo. Is response to numerous inquiries, the Anti- Corruption Committee of Armenia has provided details regarding the detention of Ruben Hakobyan. He is the lawyer for the third Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and the leader of the "Strong Armenia" party, Samvel Karapetyan.
According to the Committee's press service, in the course of the criminal proceedings, sufficient evidence has been obtained that the lawyer, who is also a member of the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia, was involved in a criminal case as a defense attorney for a defendant who was accused of murder.
According to the source, the lawyer conspired with the brother of the accused to coerce a witness to the murder. The coercion involved persuasion from the lawyer and death threats from the brother of the murder. The witness was pressured to change his initial testimony, which was the basis of the indictment, to provide false testimony at the next court hearing. "That is, to give false testimony that would help the defendant to evade responsibility," the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia reported.
Furthermore, according to the source, the witness was given a bribe of an amount not yet determined by the investigation. After receiving bribe, he knowingly gave false testimony at a subsequent court hearing. "Based on the obtained facts indicating the commission of a crime, criminal prosecution has been initiated against three individuals, including the lawyer, under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Armenia," the agency concluded.
Earlier, it was reported that lawyer Hakobyan had been detained on suspicion of allegedly interfering with the administration of justice or the investigation of the case. In this regard, the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia issued a statement expressing concern over the detention of a member of their Council. They said that are maintaining contact with Hakobyan's defense team.
