ArmInfo. Artur Avanesyan (Kandaz), a legendary Artsakh intelligence officer, holder of the Second Degree "Combat Cross" Order, and head of the Strong Armenia party's security team, has been detained by officers of Armenia's Anti-Corruption Committee on charges of bribery. Arega Hovsepyan, a member of the Strong Armenia party, shared this information.
She reported that Avanesyan was detained by law enforcement officers around 8:00 a.m. local time. According to Hovsepyan, searches were conducted at the legendary intelligence officer's home and no items related to the criminal proceedings were found. "Furthermore, no prohibited items were found in his home. Avanesyan is a defendant in an election bribery case and, naturally, pleads not guilty. We are currently awaiting a decision on the date of the court hearing regarding Avanesyan's pretrial detention," Hovsepyan said, adding that Avanesyan has been detained and is a defendant.
"This is the face of Nikol Pashinyan's 'real Armenia,' who is realizing the long-held dreams of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. For 30 years, Aliyev was unable to detain Kandaz, but now the Armenian authorities in Mother Armenia will do so," Hovsepyan emphasized live on her Facebook page. She added that these steps will not break the Strong Armenia movement, and that change is inevitable, along with Samvel Karapetyan.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Committee announced that Avanesyan and four others were detained in connection with the election bribery case. According to the published report, the case was opened based on Avanesyan's wiretapping. This isn't the first time opposition figures have been detained based on wiretapping recordings. And there's no information yet on whether these arrests were carried out legally, after receiving court approval, or whether they were carried out in violation of the law.
