ArmInfo. Armenia must decide for itself on its future relations with the European Union. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas told journalists in Yerevan.
According to her, Armenia makes its own decisions. "Elections will be held here in a month, and of course, EU membership is being considered, but Armenia must make its own decisions," Kaja Kalas said, adding that the summit in Yerevan also demonstrates the importance of the Caucasus, especially now, given the war in Iran. "We're talking about connectivity, but also about resilience to the threats we face," Kalas said, adding that Europe is not only about geography but also about values and principles.
Answering a question about the importance of the Middle Corridor and Georgia in the current geopolitical situation, Kallas noted, "The Middle Corridor is very important. I'm referring to what we're seeing in the Middle East. Everyone is also discussing how to diversify trade routes and mitigate the risks associated with the closure of one of them. That's why connectivity and these routes are so important. Of course, we need to look at what we can do in this direction and who our partners are," the head of European diplomacy noted.
Responding to a question about Georgia-EU relations, she urged attention to geography and the countries located there.
"Therefore, of course, discussions are underway about what we can do in this direction to advance the Middle Corridor's connectivity. We have certain questions regarding Georgia, given that the government is not actually taking any steps, despite its stated desire to join the EU. We see that steps are being taken in the wrong direction. This also creates constraints, for example, in terms of funding allocation," noted Kaja Kallas.
