ArmInfo. The so-called "KGB Basement" is a disgrace to RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This was stated by Edmon Marukyan, leader of the Bright Armenia party, during a protest in front of the RA National Security Service building on May 26.
According to him, those who previously occupied this basement are now in power and, in essence, are continuing the work of their predecessors. This basement, which does not meet international standards, must be closed. "We've been talking about this for eight years, but nothing has changed," the politician noted, adding that this is no coincidence, as the NSS Director reports to Pashinyan, and therefore, he is also the head of the KGB basement. Marukyan also spoke of the widespread wiretapping of Armenian citizens by the security services.
"All those against whom criminal proceedings have been initiated over the past four to five months, as well as over the past year, are political prisoners, starting with Samvel Karapetyan. The case of Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan was one of the first," Marukyan noted, adding that he doesn't believe a single audio recording released by law enforcement agencies. He claimed that wiretapping is now widespread, which is a gross violation of privacy.
Speaking about the upcoming Armed Forces parade, Marukyan noted that the country needs military exercises, not parades. "This parade is a kind of pre-election PR stunt for the current government. <The government has many PR tools: from raising pensions to handing out bonuses to thousands of people. And they will also try to present this parade to the people as their own achievement,>" the party leader stated.
