Armenia wants to introduce residency requirement for participation in  elections - MP

ArmInfoThe opposition tried everything possible to rig the parliamentary elections. Vahagn Aleksanyan, a member of the RA National Assembly from the ruling Civil Contract party, told reporters on June 16.

According to him, based on the results of the investigations  conducted by the RA Anti-Corruption Committee, the scale of the  violations is becoming clear. "It is becoming clear how these  scoundrels tried to slap election price tags on the foreheads of our  fellow citizens. However, the Armenian citizen did not sell out,  declaring that he is not selling his vote," Vahagn Aleksanyan noted,  pointing to four candidates for NA from the opposition "Strong  Armenia" bloc who are on the run. He also considered it unacceptable  that Prosperous Armenia Party representative Sedrak Arustamyan, by  assuming full responsibility, absolved his leader, Gagik Tsarukyan,  of criminal liability. "Now, perhaps Narek Karapetyan will also take  the blame for the crimes of his uncle, Samvel Karapetyan, who could  thereby avoid criminal liability? I don't know, we'll see," said  Vahagn Aleksanyan.

He also announced measures aimed at eliminating election bribery in  the future. In particular, discussions are underway regarding the  application of a residency requirement. Discussions on this issue are  ongoing, and at this stage there is no need to disclose details,  especially given the diverse opinions. The idea, the MP continued, is  to link participation in elections to the length of time a person has  lived in Armenia.
