
ArmInfo. Aram Ghazaryan, Director of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and Deputy Interior Minister, discussed bilateral issues with Masahiro Ueki, Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Office in Georgia.
According to the ministry's press service, during the meeting, Ghazaryan emphasized the importance of effective cooperation with JICA, noting that programs implemented with the Agency's assistance have made a significant contribution to the technical upgrading of the MIA's rescue service, the development of personnel skills, and the improvement of the disaster risk management system. He also noted that the Armenian side highly values Japan's long-standing experience in disaster risk management.
During the meeting, the parties discussed technical equipment for rescue services, the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and other issues of mutual interest. Following the discussions, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Armenia and the representative of the JICA office confirmed their commitment to further strengthening their partnership and continuing joint initiatives in targeted areas.
It is worth noting that the Japan Development Agency (JDA) has implemented and is currently implementing several projects in Armenia. Specifically, JICA provided Armenia with a $240 million loan, which was used to construct and commission a thermal unit at the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in 2010. JICA is also implementing a $2.5 million seismic risk assessment project in Armenia. The agency is also investing $4.5 million to support the development of small and medium-sized businesses in the country. In 2021, with JICA support, an archaeological restoration laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art equipment opened in Yerevan. In 2026, a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, at a meeting held at the Ministry of Environment of Armenia, discussed prospects for cooperation in the protection of Lake Sevan and adjacent ecosystems.
