A lawyer demands an investigation into police actions against her daughter — she linked them to pressure on her legal practice

ArmInfo. Lawyer Zaruhi Postanjyan has demanded an investigation into the actions of the police toward her daughter, Greta Drampyan, which took place on September 22.

As the lawyer wrote on her Facebook page, on September 22, two men who introduced themselves as police officers came to her apartment, where her daughter also lives.  "At the time of the incident, Greta Drampyan and another minor daughter of mine were in the apartment. Initially, the individuals in question said that they were looking for a certain Tatevik, who, according to them, might live at that address or nearby, and that they intended to draw up a report against her. However, they later changed the reason they had given for their visit and stated that they were actually looking specifically for Greta Drampyan," the lawyer reported.

In particular, as Postanjyan explained, they said that an investigator had instructed them to come for Greta Drampyan and take her to the Investigative Committee of Armenia because, according to their claim, she had the status of a witness in some criminal proceeding. At the same time, the lawyer noted, the individuals in question said that they had no summons or other relevant document with them, and that her daughter should call the investigator herself and clarify her questions directly with him. "During this time, the two men continued to remain at the apartment door and demanded that Greta Drampyan open the door. Moreover, they threatened to put Greta in handcuffs and detain her. These threats were made under circumstances in which Greta Drampyan had not been presented with any legal grounds for detention; any procedural document concerning detention; any decision on compulsory attendance; a summons; or any other legal act," Postanjyan continued.  She also specified that that day, at approximately 17:30, not only the two police officers who had come to the apartment door were in the courtyard of their building, but also an organized group of police officers—a police cordon. "Moreover, an appropriate technical device was brought into the courtyard of our building for the purpose of entering the apartment through the window. Thus, this was not simply an attempt by two police officers to convey some information to a citizen or notify them," the lawyer said.  In this regard, she recalled that under Article 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia, the body conducting the proceedings is obliged to properly notify persons who have the right or duty to participate in a procedural action or court hearing. According to her, what happened also affects the fundamental rights to respect for private and family life and the home. "Article 31 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia guarantees the inviolability of everyone’s private and family life, while Article 32 guarantees the inviolability of the home. The same rights are protected by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights," Postanjyan recalled.  She linked what happened to an attempt to obstruct her legal practice. "I am a political opponent of Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and have publicly criticized his activities and those of the current authorities for many years. At the same time, I am a lawyer and, among other things, represent persons who are opponents of the political authorities. In this regard, the possible motives behind actions taken against members of my family cannot be considered as part of an investigation while completely ignoring my political and professional activities. On May 18, 2026, during the election campaign, Pashinyan personally mentioned me in a public speech, using a number of insulting descriptions, and in the same speech, speaking about my legal practice, said: "go defend Vardanik," referring to my client, Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan. This statement was published by the mass media on the same day," the lawyer recalled.  In connection with the above, Postanjyan demanded that the competent authorities verify, through objective evidence, the version that political motives were involved. At the same time, she demanded that they also examine whether there were possible indications of abuse by an official of authority or official powers, as provided for by Article 441 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, as well as any other possible criminal offenses arising from the facts established during the investigation. In addition, the appeal calls for registering a report of allegedly committed crimes, conducting a full and objective investigation into the circumstances of the police officers’ visit on September 22, 2026, identifying all persons involved, the grounds for and legality of their actions, and providing a legal assessment of possible violations of Greta Drampyan’s rights, the inviolability of the home, and interference with the applicant’s legal and political activities.
