ArmInfo. Claims by some media outlets about the unsafety of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) are nothing short of bewildering. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, commenting on media reports about the alleged unsafety of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
"It feels like some media outlets have simply played an old record, and a creaky one at that. The needle is slipping, the gramophone is clogged with dirt and dust, but they're trying to make this grinding sound heard." This refers to materials devoted to the alleged dangers of further operation of the NPP. "But the most important thing when assessing these materials is to see that they lack any factual basis," the Russian diplomat noted.
According to her, given that the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant's main partner is the state corporation Rosatom, which always responsibly fulfills its obligations, the complaints of certain so-called journalists, which, besides being perplexing, raise nothing but questions about why these guidelines were used.
Zakharova believes there are also questions regarding the political motivation behind such publications, which appeared against the backdrop of the COP-17 climate conference in Yerevan. "Perhaps they are caused by someone's desire to somehow undermine the Russian-Armenian nuclear energy project," she added.
She then presented a chronology of actions to ensure the safety of the Armenian NPP, including the extension of its lifespan, which are being carried out in accordance with IAEA standards.
