ArmInfo. The arrest of Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, head of the Chancellery of Mother See of Etchmiadzin, has been extended by two months. Lawyer Arsen Babayan announced this in a conversation with journalists.
"The archbishop's arrest has been extended for two months, and visits are also restricted. The only good news is that the defense's motion to visit his sister's children has been granted," Babayan stated.
The lawyer noted that they intend to appeal the decision after its publication. Babayan also noted that this continues the pressure on the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC).
As a reminder, on December 5, 2020, by a court decision, Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan, head of the chancery of the Mother See of Etchmiadzin, was remanded in custody for two months. He was arrested on December 4 on drug trafficking charges. According to Archbishop Arshak's lawyer, Arsen Babayan, his client is accused of instructing an employee to plant drugs in the bag of a protester against the Catholicos of All Armenians in 2018, allegedly for the purpose of discrediting him. The lawyer called this charge absurd, emphasizing that by bringing such charges against Archbishop Arshak, the investigation is attempting to discredit him in the eyes of the public.
